“A Nice Place to Visit"
Transition
One of my African students once asked if there was anything to
the rumor he'd heard that there was a Bible in every hotel room
in America. Though I'd never thought about it as strange before,
I had to admit it was true. Why the traveler can find a Gideon in
any rented room across the land is perhaps best left to a cultural
anthropologist to explain. Such is only one of the strange habits
cultivated by the natives of these parts. We worry about losing
weight while we stuff our refrigerators to bursting. We bargain
for real estate and art, but pay the tag price for bric-a-brac at
K-Mart. Our cultivated fields stretch from coast to coast, but we
have no peasantry to speak of. From time to time I'm reminded of
what an exotic place North America really is...
